Creating Sacred Spaces

Updated: Aug 7, 2023

Set and setting are two words you often hear when people are getting ready to have an intentional experience that is intended to elicit deep and profound personal growth. Setting and set are usually in reference to using psychedelics for meditation and spiritual growth; however, this can be said for everyday life too.

Your space or setting, in relationship to the energy you're bringing to the table, sets the tone for meaningful experiences, interactions, productive work, restful sleep, and even creative playtime. Ideally, your setting is a space or altar that you've intentionally dedicated to your personal and/or spiritual growth.

How do the spaces that we occupy nurture our spirit?

How is the space that you meditate in nurture your meditation practice? What tools and rituals nurture you and your practice? The same could be asked for workspaces, and common and creative spaces in the home. How does your personal space celebrate sharing meals with loved ones, relaxing, or connecting with others?

Here are some simple tips to help create sacred space in your setting.

  1. Designate a space in a room or in your home. The energy of this space should naturally feel good to spend time in. If you're choosing a room, it will ideally feel good to walk into. If it doesn't initially, what would need to change to shift the energy of the room?

  2. Create an intention for your sacred space. A little intention goes a long way. Write it down. Feel how your intentions settle in your heart, your gut, and your whole body.

  3. Feel out what palette will support you and your intentions for this space. Perhaps you need calming peaceful colors and soft textures. Perhaps your spirit would thrive in bright, vibrant colors and patterns. What colors, textures, and patterns will nurture your wholebeing practice? (It doesn't have to make sense.) Choose colors, smells, textures, and sounds that are pleasing and satisfying for you to experience in your body. You'll become more excited, or peaceful, or happy.

  4. Clean your space. Clean space leaves space for flow and energy. Cluttered space = cluttered energy. Clear the air through burning fresh or dried herbs or palo santo. Play a singing bowl or some pleasing music. Let the breeze clear out stagnant energy.

  5. Add an altar. This is a table of any size or flat-topped block used as the focus for rituals and your meditation practice.

  6. Add items to your space and altar that add meaning to your space and practice. This may be fresh cut flowers and herbs, trinkets, photos, letters, statues, prayer beads, and anything that brings you inner peace and even warms your heart. The objects should inspire you, bring you energy and joy.

  7. Add any offering to your ancestors and God(s) on your altar or in your space. Fruit, a bowl of rice, letters written to deceased family, friends and loved ones, ancestors, and coins are examples of offerings to our beloveds.

  8. Add paper and pencils/pens. This is to write down personal insights, affirmations, intentions, ideas to manifest and cords to cut or anything your heart desires.

  9. Decide when you will use your sacred space. Morning meditation? Evening gratitude and prayers? When will you visit your space? Every day? Every Wednesday and Sunday?

Creating a beautiful and intentional sacred space can lead to more beautiful and inspired moments.
