Since transitioning my practice from individual, couple and relationship counseling to life coaching, I've had past, prospective, and current clients ask me what the difference is. So I thought I would write a little bit about what coaching is, what it is not, and when to seek either.
Integrative life coaching is a collaborative and empowering process designed to support individuals in achieving their personal and professional goals while integrating aspects of the mind, body, and spirit or personal energy.
A life coach serves as a guide and facilitator, helping clients gain clarity, develop action plans, and overcome obstacles to create positive changes in their lives. Through active listening, asking powerful questions, and providing objective feedback, a life coach empowers clients to tap into their strengths, honor and take action on their potential, and navigate their unique path to success and fulfillment. Everyone's paths have similarities and differences, and Integrative Life Coaching meets you where you are at.
Life coaching is not therapy or counseling. It does not focus on diagnosing or treating mental health disorders or unresolved trauma. Life coaching does not dwell on the past or seek to provide solutions or advice for issues related to mental health.
Instead, it is a present and forward-focused, action-oriented process that helps individuals set and achieve meaningful goals, enhance personal growth, and create a more fulfilling life. While a life coach may provide support and motivation, they do not make decisions for their clients or impose their own personal values or beliefs. Life coaching cannot be billed to health insurance but can potentially be reimbursed if you have a Health Savings Account (HSA) and if it's specifically covered under your plan.
The specific role of a life coach is to empower clients to discover their own answers, tap into their inner wisdom, and take inspired action towards their desired outcomes.
Life coaching is a collaborative partnership that empowers individuals to unlock their potential, set and achieve goals, and create a life they love. It is not therapy, counseling, or consulting, but a distinct and powerful approach that focuses on personal growth, goal attainment, and creating positive change.
While I possess an advanced degree in psychology and have received training in providing psychotherapy, it is important to note that I do not offer therapy services, specifically. While coaching can be therapeutic in nature, it is not therapy. If you require therapeutic interventions, I am happy to provide referrals and recommendations to qualified professionals in the therapy field.
I genuinely value many modalities of healing and recognize that coaching and therapy can work hand in hand as complementary tools for personal growth and healing. Integrative Life Coaching can also be a natural next step after "graduating" from psychotherapy.
